  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Whole milk or use heavy cream for a richer sauce
  • ½ teaspoon Salt adjust to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon Turmeric Optional - for a golden color
  • ¼ teaspoon Onion powder Optional - for extra flavor

Instructions
 

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once it’s melted and bubbly, add the flour. Whisk continuously to combine the butter and flour into a smooth, golden paste (this is called a roux). Don’t rush this step—taking your time ensures the roux develops the right flavor and texture.
  • Slowly pour in the milk, a little bit at a time, while whisking vigorously to avoid lumps. Keep stirring until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency. If you want a thicker sauce, let it cook a little longer. If you prefer a thinner sauce, you can always add a little extra milk.
  • Once the sauce has thickened, sprinkle in the salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings you’re using, like turmeric or onion powder. Stir everything together until well combined.
  • Give it a taste! This is your chance to adjust the seasoning, adding a little more salt, pepper, or any additional flavors you fancy.
